Information for Majors
Advisors and Representatives
In our department, the role of the major advisor is to support students from their sophomore through their senior year, and to help them work their individual pathway through the Anthropology major in a way that supports students' diverse interests and goals while making sure the students meet the major or minor requirements in a timely fashion. Major advisors take turns signing up a cohort of new majors and minors, usually in their sophomore year, and continue advising that cohort until their graduation. In instances where a major advisor for a particular cohort is on leave in a given semester, another faculty member will step into that role until the original major advisor's return from leave. The major advisor(s) listed below for your cohort are the best people to contact with questions about the major or minor, questions about summer opportunities, funding opportunities, transferring credits from study abroad programs, etc. If you are a prospective student, you are welcome to contact the department chair to arrange a meeting and a conversation about Anthropology and how it may fit with your interests.

During their time at the College, our majors often work on an individual basis with faculty whose research interests complement that of the student. Most often, majors design their own, independent projects in collaboration with faculty mentors, including through funded College-wide opportunities such as the Hanna Holborn Gray fellowship, the Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship, the Summer Science Research opportunities in social and natural sciences, and through independent internships supported by the Career and Civic Engagement Office. These experiences often inform the majors' senior thesis project, though they can also be standalone projects as well.
Primary senior thesis advising is done by faculty who are teaching the Senior Conference courses in a given year, which also supports community-building with other thesising seniors. Seniors also regularly consult with other department faculty with related interests and expertise, including when those faculty are not officially teaching in the Senior Conference sequence.
Your elected major representatives for 2025-26 are Jasmine Marshall and Nyla McNeil.
Declaring the Major
Please see the Dean's Office site for detailed information on declaring a major. The Sophomore Planning Process site is especially helpful. When you are ready to declare the major, contact the major advisor assigned to your expected graduation year, listed above.
Letters of Recommendation
Anthropology majors/minors who wish to request a letter of recommendation for graduate school, internships, fieldwork opportunities, or jobs should aim to request the letter at least three weeks in advance of the application deadline.
When you contact a faculty member to request the letter, please attach your latest resume or CV; a list of all programs/jobs you are applying for, with associated deadlines; a draft of your application essay, personal statement, and/or cover letter; and complete information on how the letter must be submitted (e.g., via email, online application system, snail mail, etc).
When requesting letters of recommendation, students are advised to submit the following form to the recommender, along with the above materials:
